Two new cars to keep an eye on in 2013

Posted on Wednesday, December 12, 2012

The new year is fast approaching and that means only one thing for petrol heads – the release of a raft of new cars.

The new Renault Clio and BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé are two of the new releases set to hit the market over the coming months and here we profile them.

Renault Clio

The Renault Clio first left the factory in 1990, and its four incarnations have been very successful for the French company. The 2013 version looks to continue that success with a range of new features that make it the most desirable version yet.

This car, like its immediate predecessor in the Clio range, is noticeably larger than older incarnations: it is available solely as a five-door, with a longer and lower wheelbase making it a spacious, comfortable family car.

This Clio is also more fuel efficient than ever, with an impressive MPG of 88.3 and an eco-wary 83g/km.

With a retail price of £13,995 this is a great, affordable car.

BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe

This is billed by BMW as a luxury car that is suitable for the family, and its elongated coupé stylings certainly do separate it from the less-practical standard 6 Series. The Gran Coupé features an extra jump seat, enabling a fifth person to sit comfortably, yet the boot is exactly the same size as the standard, so it might not be suitable for accommodating luggage for holidays etc.

As you might expect from a car like this, it is not the most economical on the market, with emissions of 149g/km that necessitate annual car tax of £130 per year.

The car will be released in June 2013 and has a basic list price of £60,000.

If you want an economical car with some of the luxury that the BMW 6 Series provides, look no further than the BMW 1 Series – hands down BMW’s most economical car – and you can buy a used BMW from at a price that fits your budget.

Winter car safety

Posted on Monday, December 10, 2012

Winter driving is fraught with potential accidents.

It is vital to be extra careful, especially if conditions are icy or the weather impairs your vision. Skidding on ice can result in loss of control which in turn can lead to a collision which in severe cases could even prove fatal.

If you do have an accident that was not your fault, you could make a personal injury claim to help pay any medical bills and cover you if you need time off work to recuperate. Often after a car accident you may be victim to whiplash or trauma. Seeking medical advice is a must and companies such as or can help with medical advice and any compensation that you could be entitled to.  The best solution, however, is to drive safely and avoid accidents wherever possible.

Skidding on ice due to driving too quickly is one of the most common causes of winter car accidents. When the roads are slippery it is necessary to drastically reduce your speed so that you can maintain control of your vehicle even if you do hit a patch of ice.

If the roads are icy the best thing to do is delay your journey until it is safer to drive. If it cannot be avoided then make sure you allow plenty of time. If you are in a hurry you are far more likely to be in an accident.

Early evening darkness and blustery snowstorms can make it difficult to see clearly. Always use your headlights and be respectful of other drivers by dipping them when a vehicle approaches in the opposite direction.

Never set off with an unclear windscreen. The extra few minutes waiting for it to demist may seem like a waste of time but could in fact save lives. If the weather becomes so severe that you cannot see clearly ahead of you then pull over at the next safe junction and wait for it to pass before continuing your journey.

Take extra care of your car when the winter weather kicks in to ensure it does not fail you at a critical moment.

Be sure the brakes are working correctly and you have plenty of petrol, window wash and a spare tyre before heading out on a drive. Always take a fully-charged mobile phone and the number of a reliable breakdown service with you. Let friends or family know your planned route and estimated time of arrival.

The UAE — Appreciating the Classics

Posted on Saturday, December 8, 2012

For many, Friday night in Dubai is a chance to hit the pubs and clubs and not worry about it the next day. For others, however, it’s a chance to go out for a spin. They’d rather enter the small hours with adrenalin coursing through their veins than alcohol.

This is hardly surprising. The UAE is one of the cheapest places in the world to buy a car. Fuel is cheap too, leaving you to only worry about car insurance costs and other expenses. What’s interesting, however, is that although new car sales have increased in the UAE, consumers are also becoming fond of classic cars.

And with the approval of the Roads and Transport Authority, the Automobile Touring Club UAE has set new standards for classic car use in Dubai.

As well as meeting safety criteria, cars must be over 30 years old to receive ‘classic car’ status. Then, based on their road worthiness, how many kilometres go on the clock per year, and other criteria, they’re placed into a specific category. In some, the owner can only take them out on certain types of road or during the daytime. In others, the car’s sole purpose is for others to admire, but sitting pretty in the owner.

The five cheapest cars to insure

Posted on Wednesday, November 28, 2012

It’s fair to say that for many people the cost of running a car has gone up in the past few years, and this isn’t just due to rising fuel costs. Insurance too is getting more expensive for drivers in countries around Europe, and that’s not just limited to those who have just passed their tests. Some cars are much cheaper to insure than others, and whether you’re an Irish citizen looking to get car insurance from or you live elsewhere in Europe, there are cars that just cost less to get covered.

1. Fiat Panda

The motor on the Fiat Panda means that the car falls into insurance category one, so it’s pretty cheap to run as well as cheap to insure. It’s not a bad little vehicle either – WhatCar? said it’s “…fun and easy to drive.”

2. Fiat Qubo

The second Fiat on the list, the Qubo is another odd looking car. It’s like a TARDIS though – much bigger inside than it looks. According to WhatCar? it’s “comfortable, easy to drive and decently refined.”

3. Volkswagen Fox

Like you’d expect from a Volkswagen, the Fox is extremely well built, and does a pretty good job of holding its value, which means that if you ever do come to sell it you’ll get a reasonable price. Again, it’s not the best looking car on the market, but it’s one of the better priced models.

4. Toyota Aygo

The Toyota Aygo has been one of the best little cars on the market since it was launched a few years ago, and its insurance category one engine means that it’s also one of the best value cars available too. Nearly 63 mpg means that it’s going to be top of many people’s shopping lists when it comes to cars that can save cash.

Scrutinizing the New Toyota Prado

Posted on Monday, November 26, 2012

Toyota are globally renowned for their 4WD vehicles, a byword for ruggedness and practicality. Now they are continuing this tradition with their latest offroader, the Prado.

Offering a 3-door range (the SX and ZR) and a 5-door alternative (the GX, GXL, VX and the Kakadu), with flexible provision for up to 7 seats, the Prado range sports a stylish choice of eight colours (Crystal Pearl, Silver Pearl, Graphite, Metal Storm, Blue Storm, Ebony, Sandstone, Dark Furnace). So the Toyota Prado is impressive technologically and aesthetically.

The SX, ZR and GX are powered by a belt-driven 4-cylinder in-line Turbo diesel engine, with a fuel consumption of 8.3 litres per 100km. Features include climate control, power windows, vanity mirrors and digitally controlled ventilation, all fitted as standard. Hydraulic power steering and cruise control are standard across the entire Prado range (the Kakadu and ZR have radar cruise control). Both models are automatic transmission only.

The GXL, VX and Kakadu are available in diesel and petrol versions. The specifications for the diesel engine are as for the 3-door models, but with slightly higher fuel consumption, and the diesel GXL and VX are available as manual or automatic. The Kakadu is automatic transmission only, however. The petrol engine is a big 6-cylinder 4-valve V6 with a fuel consumption of 8.8 litres per 100km, controlled by Toyota's Dual Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence. This is a system for providing optimum valve timing, improving fuel consumption and delivering an enjoyable driving-experience while reducing emissions.

What makes the Toyota Prado really new is its advanced Driver Assisted Technology. The system has been updated with innovative additions to make driving both on and off road much easier and safer.

Safety is paramount, and the Active Braking with Intelligence (AB-i) ensures sudden stopping in emergencies, thanks to sensors inside the wheels sending feedback to the braking system. Traction Control (TRC), operated by brake or throttle, makes acceleration on slippery or mixed surfaces much safer by locking any wheel that slides. Vehicle Stability Control works in conjunction with AB-i and TRC to control oversteer and understeer, thereby reducing the potential for hazard.

As regards manoeuvrability the Prado is highly adaptable to all-terrain driving while handling well on roads too. Hill Start Assist (provided on automatic models only) ensures that uphill starts do not slip downhill and is invaluable on low-traction terrain. Downhill driving, parking and reversing are also governed by Toyota's Intelligence system. Multi-Terrain Select, working with the Advanced Braking System, selects different rates of traction for mogul, loose rock, mud-and-sand, rock, from the steering wheel.

Powerful, practical, safe, great to drive, with luxurious interiors, the Toyota Prado is a first-rate option for the driver seeking a new 4WD car.
